The First Museum Dedicated to Giacometti Will Open in Paris

The first museum entirely dedicated to the work of Alberto Giacometti will be created in Paris. The Giacometti Museum & School is scheduled to open in the second half of 2028 – rather than in 2026 as originally planned – and will be located in the former Gare des Invalides railway station in the city’s 7th arrondissement.

The initiative is led by the Fondation Giacometti, which has long been responsible for preserving and promoting the legacy of the Swiss sculptor. Until now, the foundation has operated from the relatively small Institut Giacometti in Paris’s 14th arrondissement. Opened in 2018, the venue has only about 350 square meters of space, which significantly limits the possibilities for presenting the collection. The new museum will be much larger, covering approximately 6,000 square meters.

The building, originally constructed for the 1900 World’s Fair, will undergo a complete renovation. The project will be led by internationally renowned architect Dominique Perrault, in collaboration with heritage architect Pierre-Antoine Gatier and landscape architect Louis Benech.

About half of the available space will be dedicated to galleries and exhibition halls. The remaining area will include a bookstore, restaurant, café, and an educational space where art classes will take place. The institution is therefore intended to combine the functions of a museum with a place for learning and gathering. An integral part of the new venue will also be the School of Creation for All, a school offering a new approach to art education.

The foundation holds an impressive collection of around 10,000 objects. It includes thousands of drawings, more than 400 sculptures, around 100 paintings, as well as prints, decorative art objects, and archives related to the artist’s studio. A large part of these works has never been publicly exhibited before.

The new museum will allow Giacometti’s work to be presented on a much broader scale—from his earliest works created in his youth, through his Surrealist period, to pieces from the postwar years and the later stage of his career. The permanent display will include several hundred works by the sculptor, alongside exhibitions featuring modern and contemporary art.

A reconstruction of Giacometti’s studio is also planned. The artist lived and worked there in Paris’s 14th arrondissement from 1926 until his death in 1966. The space, currently on view at the Institut Giacometti, will be transferred to the new location and become part of the permanent exhibition.
