Women of the Bauhaus: The Story of Female Artists Captured in 300 Photographs

As early as the 19th century, women were experimenting with the new medium, testing its boundaries and possibilities. The same was true at the Bauhaus, where photographers and artists working with the camera viewed reality in a fresh, often surprising way. This exhibition reminds us that the history of photography has been co-created by women from the very beginning.

The exhibition “New Woman, New Vision. The Female Bauhaus Photographers” is based on the collection of the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin and features around 300 photographs, including both well-known shots and lesser-recognised works.

Many of the photographs presented had previously lacked clearly attributed authorship, so the exhibition also serves to restore recognition to the women artists who remained in the shadows for years.

The range of works on display is very broad. Alongside portraits and architectural photography, abstract experiments are also presented. They reveal the Bauhaus’s characteristic interest in new ways of seeing, as well as a playful approach to form and method.

The exhibition features works by artists such as Gertrud Arndt, Ellen Auerbach, Irena Blühová, and Marianne Brandt. An important complement is provided by works of artists associated with the so-called New Bauhaus in Chicago, the Institute of Design—an institution that continued the school’s ideas in the United States.

Three contemporary artists—Kalinka Gieseler, Caroline Kynast, and Sinta Werner—have also been invited to participate, engaging in dialogue with the archival photographs.

The exhibition at the Museum of Photography in Berlin runs from 17 April to 4 October 2026.
