Street lamp powered by the wind

Berlin-based design student Tobias Trübenbacher has developed a lantern with an integrated wind turbine that produces its own renewable energy and only lights up when needed. The project aims to reduce light pollution and emissions from street lighting and mitigate its impact on humans and animals.

The lamp is powered by wind and it is activated by movement. "If we want to preserve a future worth living in, we urgently need to transform our cities into climate-neutral, sustainable and less harmful places," says the designer. It also highlights the role of the problem of light pollution.

“We urgently need to tackle light pollution and the associated loss of biodiversity. This can only happen if cities themselves generate energy - through locally embedded, decentralized systems and 'pro-consumer' products in large numbers scattered across urban spaces. In this context, wind is an often underestimated but constantly growing potential” he adds.

The Papilio can be mounted on a wall or set up as a free-standing lantern. Ideally, the lamp should be placed three to six meters above the ground, where the wind is strongest.

“Light pollution not only has a bad effect on human health - for example, it causes sleep disturbance, depression, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer - but it also has a serious impact on flora and fauna” explains Trübenbacher.

"It is now estimated that in Germany alone, in one summer night, about 1.2 billion insects are killed due to street lighting" he adds.
