Home is an experiment!
Alexander House is a real experiment. It is the seat of the Australian design studio Alexander & CO. The architects decided to treat the interior of their headquarters as an architectural showcase that aims to challenge ideas about home, land, family and work.
As architects say, their new headquarters is a real laboratory that is to be used to learn, inspire, develop cooperation and creativity.
In addition to reclaimed wood and bricks, and compacted earth panels, the consistent range of materials is made of concrete, polished plaster, steel, brass and stone accents. Finishes and materials that are inherently imperfect have been selected. The materials have been selected to show their aging process: for example, as in the case of sandblasted wood and brass, which turn black over time and develop a noble patina.
On the ground floor there is an open space with a cafe and kitchen, and a large room that can accommodate the entire studio team consisting of 24 people. Workstations and a material library were located in the spacious basement. A mezzanine with a concrete bench is a place for quiet work, there is also a private library and a conference room.
Three bathrooms (all with a toilet and shower) with very different aesthetic and material directions are an interesting inspiration for customers visiting the studio.
There is also a separate apartment in the house, where both studio guests and team members working remotely can stay overnight. Other amenities include a steam bath, outdoor shower, ice bath and swimming pool.
AH is a space that supports local craftsmen. Each new material, technology or detail is the result of joint experiments with local suppliers. Noteworthy are the compacted earth panels pressed on site and a series of garden furniture that were made in cooperation with the Re team. Studio Collective. Another interesting solution are Lutyens pads; handcrafted from recycled materials by Natural Brick Co.
