Ode to Berlin
We invite you to a spacious apartment created by combining two apartments. The interior was to be a visual love letter to Berlin: the art created here, architecture and the pulsating energy of the city's inhabitants. Berlin COORDINATION studio is responsible for the project.
The architects combined two adjacent penthouses into one spacious, light-flooded apartment. This new layout allows you to create two separate areas. The first is the more communal area on the courtyard side, which houses an open kitchen and dining area, defined by a reduced color palette of black, white and warm earth tones. The northern part serves as a private area and includes a living room, a bedroom and a bathroom, as well as a slender balcony overlooking the Kantstrasse. These two zones are linked by floor-to-ceiling glass doors with a brass frame, reminiscent of the post-war architecture of the 1950s.
In the design, the architects tried to emphasize the advantages of the existing architecture. Among them, the platform separating the open kitchen from the dining room attracts attention. In close cooperation with the client, COORDINATION developed a sophisticated interior concept with non-standard furniture inspired by the rich collection of the client's art.
The contrasting colors of individual rooms are derived from selected works of art from different styles and eras, which become the central element of each room. The dining room features an impressive 17th-century oil painting, the dark tones of which echo in the open-plan kitchen designed by COORDINATION, while providing an exciting contrast to the custom-made furniture.
These include a large oval dining table and a matching round shelf in white ash and steel. Both elements are inspired by the Art Deco movement and elements of the modernist style of the 1960s.
In the more private part of the apartment, the choice of colors is inspired by a moving Piet painting from the 18th century. A wall cabinet reaching the ceiling allowed to create a niche for a piano. The custom-made Toussaint bookcase has the same style as the dining room furniture. The bedroom, bathroom and balcony, as well as the dressing room, are decorated in delicate shades of blue that correspond with marine paintings.
