An island in La Défense
This project is an extremely poetic return to nature in an environment that definitely has little in common with lost paradise. We are in La Défense - a Parisian district full of glass skyscrapers and soulless steel. This 19th-century house is a remnant of the old part of the city that has been pressed into a mesh of modern skyscrapers. The architects wanted to provide the residents with a comfortable shelter from the hustle and bustle of the city and the monumental ferocity of the local architecture.
The French studio Clément Lesnoff-Rocard in cooperation with Gil Percal is responsible for the project. The inspiration for the project was the famous series "Lost" - while in the series the characters were lost on a wild island, here the inhabitants were lost among wild architecture. It was the return to nature that they needed.
It was decided to turn the life of the inhabitants towards the green patio. Unfortunately, over the years the house had grown into chaotic materials and random décor, many of which could be removed. The architects wanted the house to be a lonely island of nature - the architectural equivalent of Eden.
The interior features many subtle references to nature: from an oak table, through a cliff-like bookcase located on several levels, to a black mat kitchen reminiscent of charcoal.
An integral part of the entire project is the patio filled with greenery. The whole thing is very coherent and harmonious - it is a perfect oasis of peace amid the hustle and bustle of a big city.
