Escape from the City? The Nest – a Self-Sufficient Sanctuary in the Treetops

Situated at the island’s highest point, The Nest was created to coexist harmoniously with its wild surroundings. Enveloped by evergreen forests and moss-covered rocks, it opens up to panoramic vistas of Howe Sound Bay.

The local context played a crucial role in shaping the project. The name The Nest captures the essence of refuge and belonging, inspiring a space that feels warm, protective, and organic.

The building consists of two geometric volumes offset from one another, creating three compact levels that maximize space without expanding the footprint. Within less than 100 square meters, the layout includes an entrance zone, a kitchen with dining area, a living room, a bathroom, a relaxation area, and a bedroom. The property also features a small workshop and a guest cabin.

The interiors of The Nest are minimalist yet cozy. Wooden finishes and a green floor echo the colors of the surrounding landscape.

Large sliding glass panels open the house to nature, blurring the boundary between indoors and outdoors. The owners gave the space a personal touch through distinctive furnishings and decorative details.

For owners, The Nest is a retreat from urban life — a place of balance, calm, and renewal. Keats Island feels both close to the city and a million miles away.

Sustainability formed the foundation of the entire concept. The red cedar façade will naturally age and blend into the forest. The home operates entirely off-grid, powered by solar energy, equipped with a combustion toilet, and a rainwater collection and filtration system. The cross-laminated timber structure, built without steel, minimized the use of concrete and reduced impact on the terrain.

Because of the site’s remote location — accessible only by passenger ferry or water taxi — prefabrication was key to the project. Daria Sheina Studio partnered with BC Passive House from Pemberton, specialists in energy-efficient modular construction. Components were prefabricated in their workshop, transported by truck and barge, and finally delivered to the site by helicopter. The entire structure was assembled in just two days.
