Romantic Imagination and the Most Famous Works of William Blake at a Major Exhibition in Europe

He was at once a poet, painter, and printmaker, and his work intertwines into a visionary world full of symbols, mythical figures, and scenes poised between heaven and hell. At the National Gallery of Ireland in Dublin, a major exhibition titled “William Blake: The Age of Romantic Imagination” presents a selection of his most renowned works, shown alongside pieces by his contemporaries and artists he later inspired.

William Blake (1757–1827) worked during a time of revolution and social change, and his art stood out not only for its subject matter but also for its form. He developed his own highly distinctive visual language, in which he explored opposing forces: creation and destruction, reason and imagination.

The exhibition opens with large, vividly colored prints that immediately outline the intense, visionary world of the artist. The following sections develop the key themes, juxtaposing Blake’s works with those of artists he admired, as well as those who drew inspiration from his art.

As the organizers emphasize, this approach allows for a deeper understanding of a pivotal moment in European art and highlights works that address themes still relevant today.

“William Blake is such an iconic figure in art and literature. I am delighted that our visitors will be able to enjoy a selection of his work in context, alongside that of his fellow artists. Many people are aware that he wrote the poem The Tyger, but know little else about him. This exhibition will provide a window into the richness of Blake’s imagination and his innovation as an artist,” says Anne Hodge, curator of prints and drawings.

The exhibition will be open until 19 July 2026.
