Small Space, Big Ideas: A Wealth of Design Solutions in the Heart of Paris
In the very heart of Paris’s Marais district, a compact 36-square-meter private retreat has been created—a French pied-à-terre designed for a Los Angeles–based client by Lauranne Elise Schmitt. The architect was granted complete creative freedom and made full use of it, crafting a space refined almost like a film set.
This is not a conservative project. Schmitt’s style is rooted in deliberate eclecticism—the juxtaposition of noble materials, deep colors, and refined details. Lacquered wood with dark, at times honeyed undertones meets gold, bronze, and shades of ochre and caramel. Graphic references to Art Deco appear, yet the overall composition remains contemporary and sensual.
The original elongated layout of the apartment was preserved, but all partitions were removed to create a fluid, open space. The successive zones unfold in a linear sequence, giving the impression that one moves through a luxurious carriage. Five south-facing windows carry light throughout the entire apartment, transforming its character over the course of the day.
The floor plays a particularly important role here, acting as the element that ties the entire concept together. Classic parquet flows seamlessly into a geometric pattern of travertine and black marble, guiding the user all the way to the bathroom.
The kitchen, though compact, remains highly functional. Concealed beneath an oak ceiling in a warm tone, it offers a surprising amount of space. A patinated brass countertop lends it elegance, while clever solutions—such as a folding table and integrated stools—allow the space to shift function with ease.
The living area combines Californian ease with Parisian elegance. Modular furniture, mirrors, and distinctive arches establish the rhythm of the interior, while decorative lighting evokes the quality of fine jewelry.
The designer placed strong emphasis on refined storage solutions. Wardrobes and compartments nearly disappear, blending seamlessly into the architecture.
The bedroom proves to be the most theatrical space. Hidden behind a large lacquered portal, it reveals itself gradually. Glazed doors diffuse the light, while the built-in structure surrounding the bed integrates storage functions and visually enlarges the space through the use of mirrors.
The bathroom is not a hidden, purely functional space, but a fully integrated part of the narrative. Finished in marble with warm, creamy chocolate tones, it resembles an elegant stage set. It is complemented by contrasting mosaics and custom-built cabinetry crafted from stained oak.
