Time for Superwood!
Ecology has seriously entered the world of design and we hope that it will stay there as long as possible. Designers realize that our planet's resources are already very limited - that's why they are looking for new materials from waste that will not harm it. Meet "Superwood"!

"Superwood" is a new wood-based material being developed for the construction and furniture industries. It is made of recycled wood fibers mixed with casein glue and pressed into panels.
Importantly, casein glue replaces the formaldehyde-based glues used in the production of conventional MDF boards, which are carcinogenic. It is free from contamination and was already used in ancient Egypt to build boats. Superwood is made of waste wood to minimize the high consumption of raw materials and conserve resources.
Furniture consumption and thus the amount of wood consumed per person is increasing every year. For years, pristine forests have been cut down to produce cheap furniture. Masses of bulky waste have to be disposed of or recycled as a result. The less pollutant wood contains, the better it can be recycled. However, much furniture is lacquered or glued with formaldehyde. They contain pollutants and cannot be recycled. The goal of the Superwood material development is to develop an aesthetic material that does not contain contaminants, consists of recycled components and is designed so that it does not have to be painted or coated.
Currently, the material is in the prototype stage and is not yet commercially available. It is being developed with the Fraunhofer Institute for Wood Research and funded by the IKEA Foundation.
