Japanese minimalism with furniture in the lead role
Brand Karimoku Furniture Inc. recently opened Karimoku Commons Kyoto, a new 150-square-metre hybrid space to showcase its brands: Karimoku, Karimoku New Standard, MAS and Ishinomaki Laboratory by Karimoku. The new showroom is located in the center of Kyoto. Karimoku Commons Kyoto is the second space of the Japanese wooden furniture manufacturer, after Karimoku Commons Tokyo, to serve as a new base in the Kansai region.
Karimoku Commons Kyoto is to function as a showroom and office space at the same time. The new place will allow visitors both to learn about the methods of furniture production by Karimoku Furniture and to get to know the wooden furniture made of them. Visitors can see and touch the furniture and learn more about the high-tech and high-touch ethos at Karimoku Furniture. The new space is located in Kyoto's crowded Nakagyo-Ku district in a former Machiya, a traditional Japanese wooden house.
Machiya features a visible façade with wooden grilles, including a clapboard and a very distinctive style of trusses. Upon entering the space, visitors are greeted by a calm and relaxed atmosphere that contrasts with the hustle and bustle outside.
The calm and harmonious space was designed with an emphasis on the Karimoku brand philosophy, also highlighting the collection designed for the brand by Norm Architects, creative directors Karimoku, architect and designer Keiji Ashizawa and British architect Norman Foster.
Slightly smaller than Karimoku Commons Tokyo, the new showroom in Kyoto allows visitors to completely immerse themselves in the world of Karimoku Furniture Inc. Karimoku Commons Kyoto was designed under the direction of Keiji Ashizawa Design.
