Neutral colors from Kelly Wearstler
Santa Monica Proper Hotel is a boutique hotel located in Santa Monica. It is designed by the star of American interior design - Kelly Wearstler. Many of the hotel's interior design elements were created in collaboration with local artisans.
The hotel has 271 rooms and it is situated close to the picturesque beach of Santa Monica. As the designer herself admits, one of her greatest inspirations was the environment in which the design was created. Palm trees, the beach, the organic shapes of local architecture - all these inspirations have been transferred to the interior.
A subdued color palette was chosen: sandy beiges and browns refer to local landscapes. The designer opted for a very rich texture, which introduced a lot of decorativeness to the interior: from wood rich with knots, to a fine checkered carpet and patterned wallpaper in the rooms.
Much of the hotel's furniture and fittings were made by local artisans. Interestingly, the hotel consists of two buildings: a historic part from 1928 and a modern one, built recently. The common artistic language of the interior had to connect both parts.
The designer wanted the interior to create an ideal environment for relaxation. Even the smallest detail has been thought through: from the mustard slats that form the frame for the wallpaper, to the ceramic plant pots in the hotel lobby. The project won the Hotel of the Year title in the 2020 AHEAD Americas hospitality competition.
