The power of contrast
Studio Vives St-Laurent has recently presented its latest project, which consisted in the renovation of an apartment located on Saint-Hubert Street in Montreal. At the end of the 19th century, several Victorian-style townhouses were built here. Stucco work, plinths and high ceilings give this place a unique character, which was the main inspiration for architects.
The project focused on renovation works in two rooms: the kitchen and the bathroom. It was very important to organize the kitchen facilities and to add a bar, which was to serve as a coffee corner and an additional table during the party.
An arched opening has been added between the living room and the kitchen, thanks to which communication has become much easier. In the kitchen, the tone is set by contrasts: from the very simple fronts of the cabinets juxtaposed with the richly decorated interior architecture, to the contrast of the warm color of wood and cold white on the walls.
The whole is complemented by a precious stone, which is also a decoration. There is a pantry and a refrigerator hidden in tall wardrobes, as well as a lot of storage space.
In the bathroom, a cherry wood cabinet was chosen, which was combined with a cream mosaic.
The owners also wanted to separate the workspace from the home: the custom-made desk fits perfectly with the rest of the furniture in the mid-century style. The office adjacent to the master bedroom was separated by panel doors, which allowed for additional illumination of this space. In the recess, it was decided to add a modern hanging cabinet, which perfectly emphasized the contrast between the new and the old.
