Architecture Inspired by Tailoring. The New V&A East Museum in London Opening Soon

The façade of the new building is composed of 479 prefabricated concrete panels, each taking on a slightly different shape. Its surface interacts with light, changing appearance throughout the day. Behind this form lies an inspiration drawn from tailoring.

The architects reference a sculptural approach to clothing, associated with the designs of Cristóbal Balenciaga. This can be seen in the way the building’s mass appears folded and modelled, as if stitched together from pieces of fabric. The motif extends even to the details: the entrances feature triangular cut-outs that echo darts — structural elements used in garment construction.

The building is not a single, monolithic volume. In line with the Japanese concept of ma, it has been designed with a clear separation between an inner core and an outer shell, with paths, ramps, and passageways running between them.

The internal layout guides visitors gradually upward through successive levels, without imposing a single fixed route. This approach reflects the idea of a place meant to be experienced and inhabited, rather than simply observed.

Neutral surfaces dominate, allowing the exhibitions to take center stage. Terrazzo concrete floors reference the materials used on the exterior. Openings and terraces bring daylight deep into the interior, while also framing views of the surrounding area.

The museum was developed in collaboration with the local community and young creatives. It also forms part of the wider East Bank project, which aims to transform this part of London into a new hub for culture and education.

To mark the opening, a major exhibition, The Music is Black: A British Story, explores the impact of Black British music on culture — both in the UK and globally. At the same time, the permanent Why We Make galleries will open, showcasing more than 500 objects from the V&A collection.
