Hawaiian house in the garden
This project of FLOAT studio in Hawaii is our dream place to spend quarantine. Located on the picturesque island of Maui, the house consists of two pavilions that are open to the paradise nature that surrounds them. The perfect place to admire the beauty of nature!
The client wanted a house design that would strengthen her bond with the surrounding nature and the land in which it was located. The first of the pavilions is closed and serves as a bedroom and a studio. Its name, Mauka, is a Hawaiian word for land in the direction of the mountains.
The building is located in such a way as to catch the first rays of sunshine in the morning and remain in the shade for the rest of the day. Thanks to this, it is an ideal refuge on hot days. The second pavilion is partly open and houses a living area with a kitchen. Its name "Makai" is the Hawaiian word "towards the sea.
The external shower hidden here offers a picturesque view of the ocean and the neighboring island of Kahoolawe. The owner wanted the pavilions to be as little anchored in the ground as possible and easy to dismantle. Therefore, it was decided to anchor to the ground with four threaded rods.
The owner of an unusual home has been associated with Hawaii since the 1960s. The heritage of unusual islands and their paradise nature is of great importance to her, hence the decision that the architecture of buildings should not dominate the landscape.
